Open G7 Chord Guitar Shape: Chart and Fingering

The open G7 chord shape (G dominant 7) involves playing the 3rd fret of the 6th string, as well as the 1st fret of the 1st string. This can be a difficult stretch at first. How to play the open G7 chord

  • Place your 3rd finger on the 3rd fret of the 6th string.
  • Place your 2nd finger on the 2nd fret of the 5th string.
  • Place your 1st finger on the 1st fret of the 1st string.
  • Strum all six strings.

  • This shape is and open chord, and the most common (and easiest) way to play the G7 chord.
  • It contains the notes (from the 6th string down) G, B, D, G, B and F.
  • It contains the 1 (root), 3, 5, 1, 3 and b7 in the key of G.
