D Flat Dorian Positions On The Guitar Fretboard

D FLAT DORIAN MODE

‘D flat dorian’ is the 2nd mode of the C flat major scale. The notes in Db dorian are:

Db – Eb – Fb – Gb – Ab – Bb – Cb

C flat major is a rarely used scale. It is enharmonically equivalent to B major. The reason why D flat dorian is a mode of C flat major and not B major is that technically, the second note of B major is C# (not Db) whereas the second not of Cb is Db.

If you have read the post on understanding the dorian mode, you will know that the dorian mode contains a flat 3 and a flat 7 (parallel approach). You will also know that it is the 2nd mode of a major scale (derivative approach). Let’s briefly look at how to construct Db dorian using both the parallel approach and the derivative approach.

Parallel Approach:

Db Major has the following notes:
Db – Eb – F – Gb – Ab – Bb – C

If we flatten the 3rd note (C) and the 7th note (G) we get the following:
Db – Eb – Fb – Gb – Ab – Bb – Cb

Derivative Approach:

Db is the 2nd note of the Cb major scale:
Cb – Db – Eb – Fb – Gb – Ab – Bb

If we play a Cb major scale and start on the 2nd note we get the following:

Db – Eb – Fb – Gb – Ab – Bb – Cb

Let’s look at the Db dorian mode in the different positions on the guitar fretboard:
