D Flat Major Scale Positions On The Guitar Fretboard

The D Flat Major Scale contains 5 flats. They are:
Db – Eb – Gb – Ab – Bb

The notes in the D flat major scale are:
Db – Eb – F – Gb – Ab – Bb – C

Let’s look at playing them in the five different positions along the fretboard. Normally when looking at scales, I have included the open position. An interesting thing to note with the D flat major scale is that there isn’t really an open position. This is because it doesn’t contain any notes that can be played as an open string. Since an open position requires the use of open strings, much like an open chord requires open strings, we can’t really play this in the “open” position. We can however play the scale in different positions along the fretboard, including the 1st position (which is almost the open position).

The first one is in the 1st position (the lowest fret is fret 1)

The next one is in the 2nd position (the lowest fret is fret 2)

The next one is in the 5th position (the lowest fret is fret 5)

The next one is in the 8th position (the lowest fret is fret 8)

The last one is in the 9th position (the lowest fret is fret 9)

So there you have all the positions along the fretboard for the Db major scale. It’s a good scale to master, as it can be used over some common guitar chords and progressions, but we’ll get to that in another post!
